The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Essay example -- English Lit
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Jekyll and Hyde was written by Robert Louis Stevenson during the Victorian era. This is significant because during this period, society is very different from todayââ¬â¢s society. When looking at this novella it is also important to consider the ideas of good and evil in the characters of Jekyll and Hyde. During the Victorian era men were more powerful and the women had a lower ranking. The belief of society were such that people were covered completely and were forced to appear ââ¬Ënon-sexualââ¬â¢. This leads to the two layers of society - a surface layer which was very polite, well-mannered and refined, and a ââ¬Ërepressedââ¬â¢ layer where people (more significantly men) expressed their unacceptable side though visiting prostitutes and involved in ...

History Art and Culture Chicago Essay
Between the years 1920 and 2001, there are several clear artistic movements (schools) in American history. There are numerous good examples of these at the several art museums scattered throughout the greater Chicago area. This paper is going to discus an artistic school (movement) that is known as the Ashcan school. The paper will then give a brief overview of two works. This school of thought is usually associated with artistic group that is known as the Eight. Whose members are Henni Robert (1865 to 1929), Glacken William (1870 to1938), Shinn Everett (1876 to 1953), Sloan French John (1871 to 1951), Lawson Emest (1873 to 1939), Prendergast Maurice (1859 to 1924), and Luks George. The Ashcan school of thought, also known as the Ash Can School of thought, refers to a realistic artistic movement that rose into prominence in America during the early 20th centaury, best known for artistic work showing scenes of daily life in the poorer neighbourhood of New York. This school of thought was composed of a group of artist, many of whom have had a stint as newspaper illustrators in Philadelphia, who show cased their artistic works once at the Macbeth Gallery in New York. The eight are commonly referred as a group, despite the diversity of their work in terms of the subject and style. Five of these artists are the only ones who painted the urban scenes that characterized the Ashcan school. The main unity of these schools if thought was based on the desire of portraying some truths concerning the dirty city. Henri Robert strived to make art to be akin to journalism. Robert wanted paint to be as real as mud, as the snow and clods of horse shit that freezes on a Broadway during winter season. The artist of this school of thought went against genteel the United States impression that was a reflection of the vanguard of the United States art of that time. Their artistic work were generally dark in tone, reflected subjects such as drunks, prostitutes, boxing matches and also captured the spontaneous moments of life. This paper is going describe the artistic work of Robert Henri and William Glacken. Chez Mouquin Chez Mouquin is an artistic work that was done by William Glacken in 1905. Chez Mouquin shows a socio sexual complexity. The picture has a dark background. There is also an image of a beautiful lady who is extravagantly dressed. The woman also looks gloomy (sad). The beautiful lady is seated with a beefy prosperous looking man in a tuxedo in a restaurant. In this picture, the beautiful woman together with the man is taking wine . Glacken William painted Chez Mouquin in 1905 inside the Parisian style cafe of the uptown market. This beautiful lady with redhead painting is Jeanne Louise Mouquin who has been depicted to be sitting politely with an owner of the restaurant James Moore of the cafe Francis. Glacken captured Jeanne Mouquin facial expression of boredom while she was possibly waiting for her husband to close the restaurant so that they can go home. James Moore resembles Henri, her husband because of the moustache. There is no doubt her husband (Henri) was busy managing the cafe that is why he didnââ¬â¢t sit for the portrait. William Glacken might have started drawing the portrait using James Moore has a stand in for Henri, planning to finish the painting after with Henri in it. Henri was busy, so he refused to sit down however; Glacken went a head and painted Moore with the wife of Mouquin. William Glacken thought that it was a great idea to have his business partner seated with Jeanne Louise. The lady didnââ¬â¢t like this idea, that his why she sulked. This painting might be a reflection of the marriage scandal that hit the newspaper. James Moore was so well known for squiring young beautiful ladies and used to refer to then as his daughter. This painting can be found at Chicago Art Institute who also has the rights.

Alfieri Tells the Audience ââ¬ËJustice Is Very Important Hereââ¬â¢. Essay
By stating in his opening speech of the play ââ¬ËJustice is very important here,ââ¬â¢ Alfieri opens the audiences minds to relate justice back to all the events in the book that occur. Throughout the play Arthur Miller shows the importance of justice mainly through Eddie and Marcoââ¬â¢s behavior, building up to Eddies tragic death. Through Alfieriââ¬â¢s first speech, Miller allows the audience to acknowledge that in America they ââ¬Ësettle for half. ââ¬â¢ This is explaining the way that Eddie sees justice, but also how Marco, who is from Sicily, would see justice and these differences. This quotation is implying that whatever justice means to the Americans it means more to the Italians. This is foreshadowing the end of the play as it links to Marcos thirst for revenge on Eddie. At the end of Act One, Miller subtly suggests the idea of justice through Marcos defensiveness over his brother and also Eddieââ¬â¢s actions towards Rodolfo. After Eddie hits Rodolfo the audience gets the feeling that he feels this is justice for Rodolfo leading Catherine away from the life Eddie wanted her to have. This is emphasised by Eddieââ¬â¢s use of the word ââ¬ËDanishââ¬â¢ to describe Rodolfo. By using this as a nickname Miller is trying to access the point that Eddie is trying to isolate Rodolfo from the Italian community and also their family. The true sense of justice in this scene however, comes from Marco who ââ¬Ëraises the chair over his headââ¬â¢. This is a clear sense of warning implied by Marco, which is clearly registered by Eddie, ââ¬ËEddies grin vanished. ââ¬â¢ This, to Marco, is a feeling of justice coming to Eddie for trying to make either him of his brother feel like they donââ¬â¢t belong. While also foreshadowing what will happen at the end of Act 2. Miller highlights justice as one of the most important things in Eddieââ¬â¢s life. However, he leads the audience to enquire whether Eddieââ¬â¢s desires are truly ââ¬Ëjustââ¬â¢. What Eddie wants is his honour and his name but also Catherine. ââ¬ËMarcos got my name. ââ¬â¢ He also wants his respect back from Marco, which he has completely lost by the actions his inappropriate feelings for Catherine have caused him to take. In the structure of a Greek tragedy that Miller is trying to create Eddie plays the protagonist. It is his conflict between his good qualityââ¬â¢s and the gradually rise of his bad ones that force the drama forwards with both Eddie and Marcos need for justice. Theà importance of justice shown in the play comes to a drama filled end with Marco finally getting the justice he believes he deserves. The end of this play was foreshadowed when Marco stated, ââ¬Ëall the law is not in a book. ââ¬â¢ By saying this Miller has implied to the audience that Marco believes it is his duty to bring Eddieââ¬â¢s life to an end, ââ¬Ëin my country he would be dead by now. ââ¬â¢ He also brings in the claim felt by Marco of natural justice and how by disregarding the respect Marco feels for Rodolfo, ââ¬Ëmy brother, my blood,ââ¬â¢ Eddie has lead himself in to the situation where he is nothing more than an ââ¬Ëanimalââ¬â¢ who deserves to die. In conclusion, throughout the play Miller implies the theme of justice as the most prominent and important theme of the play. It is one of the only things Marco and Eddie have in common, in the way that they both search for it and in the end it finished with Eddie dead and Marco being sent back to Italy. In the final scene Miller shows the audience that though you may gain the justice you sought out for like Marco, ââ¬ËEddie falls to his knees before Marco,ââ¬â¢ it may be the thing that leads to a characters downfall, in which it did with both Eddie and Marco at the end of this play.

By doing another trial it would definitely increase the operation costs. He could also further discuss with the supplier of local brand and show the burned blades. Financial Services - Personal Financial Planning Essay
Financial Services - Personal Financial Planning - Essay Example The importance of financial planning, which is not just comprised of saving is also discussed. This paper aims to give some recommendations in order to gain the incentives of having a financial plan without being penalized by the government through its policies. It may be true that the state punishes those who save. Accordingly, there can be three most identifiable government policies that discourage savings: taxation on savings and capital; low interest rates in risk-free financial instruments; and social security and other government programs that substitute savingsââ¬âthe major argument of the above statement. Taxation on savings and capital. One government policy is to make provision for taxes. Taxes and government spending are part of the fiscal policy. Because taxes are included in savings account for every interest received by an investor or depositor, the taxes serve as a disincentive to save, at least in the risk-free securities in the market. Low interest rates: less incentive for delaying consumption due to inflation. Low interest rates in banks, which sometimes result in very low real rate after deducting inflation, give consumers very little incentive to save. Due to the time value of money, consumers might as well save as their dollars are worth more for the current, than delay consumption because the reward is not huge enough for them to be compensated. Social Security and other government programs substitute savings. With more government programs that are available to the public that substitute the role of savings, the public does not find any other reason to save behind such safety net. The prevalence of these programs that are part of the policies of the government, seem to be enough for the public which does not give additional incentive to save. While people are discouraged by the government to save through its various policies that penalizes the savers, the futureââ¬â¢s uncertainty is the major motivation behind all personal
